*012126-Owl in Pine Tree*

The Owl in the Pine

Very early one morning—too early for cartoons and definitely too early for chores—I heard a sound outside my window.

“Hoot-hoot.”

It came from the tall pine tree behind our house. The same pine that had been dropping mysterious white splashes on the ground for weeks. No one knew why. We had theories. None of them were good.

The hoot-hoot made me curious—and a little proud, as if the sound had chosen our yard on purpose.

I grabbed my birding binoculars and stepped outside while the sky was still sleepy. The air felt held in place, as if waiting. The pine stood very still, pretending to be just a tree. I scanned the lower branches, then higher, where needles thickened and shadows pooled against the trunk.

And then—I saw it.

An owl, pressed close to the bark, feathers patterned so perfectly they seemed grown there. Big. Silent. Almost invisible. It opened one eye just a sliver, and I felt a jolt in my chest—being seen by something that had already decided I was harmless.

The hooting.
The white mystery on the ground.
Not accidents at all.

Just one very serious owl doing exactly what it had always done.

I felt lucky standing there. Owls don’t show themselves to just anyone. The owl stayed put, solid and watchful, guarding the morning as the sun slowly climbed into the sky.

I lowered the binoculars and smiled. The pine was no longer just a tree.

It was home.
